Do dogs sweat?
Dogs do sweat, but from completely different places than humans do. The
canine skin and armpit have no sweat glands. Instead, dogs sweat
through their feet and from the pads under their feet. Panting is their
main method of ridding themselves for heat.
Take care of your dog. Preventing heat stroke is essential. This is
especially important in bulldogs, pugs and all other breeds with
compromised respiration. They have a higher risk of overheating because
they don’t breathe very efficiently.
Can dogs see colors?
Dogs have the rods and cones that allow color vision, but their
retina is quite different from ours. Dogs see a very muted version of
that what we see. They see more gray shades than colors.
Is a cold and wet nose a sign of good health?
Not always. Sometimes it can be a sign of good health, but sick
pets can also have cold and wet noses. A healthy pet can also have a
warm nose. If your pet seems sick (lethargic, not eating) and has a
cold or warm nose it’s a good idea to contact the veterinarian.
What can I do for a dog with smelly ears?
Smelly ears are a sign of ear infection. Some breeds with large and
floppy ears are quite susceptible to chronic ear infections. The dogs
should be seen by a doctor. Regular cleaning can help and sometimes
antibiotics might be necessary. Sometimes, further steps may be
necessary, such as examination of the type of bacteria and,
occasionally, surgery to open the ear canal.
Why does my dog have seizures?
A seizure is caused by an excessive stimulation of the brain parts
which control muscle activity. The possibility of seizure exists in all
animals. There are many causes for seizures: toxic chemicals,
hypoglycemia, head trauma, epilepsy, brain masses and many more. Dogs
with seizures should be taken to the vet. It may be possible to break
the uncontrolled stimulation. The dog should always be fully examined
after this “explosion”. Great care should be taken when touching them.
Can a spayed female dog still go into heat? Can she
still get pregnant?
Heat symptoms are nipple swelling and nesting behavior. This will
never happen if the dog is totally spayed. Sometimes, a remaining piece
of an ovary in the abdomen brings about these signs. If a spayed dog
shows these signs, she must be brought to her vet. The spaying
operation removes the ovaries and uterus. This eliminates heat cycles
and the dog will be unable to get pregnant.
Why does my dog need regular veterinary dental
cleanings?
Like humans, dogs need regular dental care. Veterinary dental
cleanings remove disease-causing plaque from the teeth before it
hardens into brown and foul-smelling bacteria. The bacteria can damage
the teeth and the gums. Symptoms are an inflamed gum line (gingivitis),
bad breath, bleeding gums and tooth loss. Moreover, these bacteria are
able to travel through the blood stream which can cause serious
infection in the rest of the body. 80 percent of dogs over the age of
three have some form of oral disease.
Can I feed my dog the same thing throughout its life?
No. A single type of food cannot maintain your pet’s health
throughout its entire life. As your dog grows, it will pass through
many different life-stages, from puppyhood to adulthood, through
pregnancy and lactation, all the way to old age. Some dogs are active,
while others are overweight. Different diets for different stages of
life will have varying levels of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, salts,
vitamins, minerals, etc.
Very importantly, special foods can help keep your pet’s weight under control, help treating different diseases, and help prevent others.

How much sleep does my puppy need?
Puppies are like human babies. Not much is known about how their
brain develops, but playing and sleeping is essential for the neural
connections. Your little dog should have as much sleep as he likes.
Puppies should be active and playing when awake. If you are worried
about your puppy's sleeping or behavior, you should take him to see the
doctor.
What age is good to go to the groomer?
It is best to wait until after the puppy has been vaccinated. This
is to avoid the possibility of infection from exposure to other dogs.
Until the dog is old enough to go to the professional groomer, you can
take care of his hair and nails yourself. Your veterinarian can advise
you how to clip the nails.
Why should I neuter/spay my dog? When is the best
time for it?
Neutering and spaying carry with them a number of advantages.
In both sexes, there is a lowered chance of reproductive tract
diseases.
Male
dogs will generally show less behavioral problems. Aggression and
dominance behavior towards other dogs decrease after neutering. It also
reduces the chance of testicular diseases and prostate cancer.
There are no real behavioral changes in female dogs after spaying, but
it has many medical benefits. Spaying at a young age prevents mammary
cancer and uterine disease (metropolitan, pyrometry). There will be no
false pregnancy.
The
best time for the surgery is after the dog has gone through one heat
cycle, generally after 6 months. Before spaying the dog should be
current on her vaccinations and test negative for worms.
And very importantly, spaying/neutering prevents unwanted puppies!
How will I know if my puppy has worms?
Most parasites can only be detected under the microscope.
Tapeworms, however, are visible to the naked eye. Tapeworms segments
pass out at the rectum of the puppy or the adult dog with the feces.
Transmission to your family is possible. Coughing can also be a sign of
worms. Tapeworm segments pass out of the pet’s rectum and often catch
in the fur on the legs and tail. Keep the pet clean and let him/her
checked out for worms regularly. We can deworm your dog and help you
prevent them from getting worms again
Is it normal that my puppy's teeth are falling out?
Yes. Just like humans, puppies have “baby teeth”. To make room for
the adult teeth, these first teeth fall out around 3 ½ months after
birth. Make sure the baby tooth has fallen out whenever you notice a
new tooth coming in. If it hasn’t fallen out, it needs to be pulled.
How can I protect my puppy from ticks and fleas?
Keep him clean! There are several effective products which are
generally easy to use – a liquid that is easily applied to the skin
between the shoulders. The medicine kills ticks and fleas for a month
or longer. All these products are very safe and veterinarian approved.
Collars and powders purchased at pet shops are not always as effective
against ticks and fleas.
